Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to questions asked by those interested in BarCamp. Feel free to add or answer any questions you find here.

Q: I was wondering if you could help me understand whether by offering a presentation on the BarcampBoston Wiki I should actually go ahead and prepare a presentation. Is there a voting process of some sort, or do presenters find out if they're presenting day of, or does anyone just present when they feel like it? I've never been to an unconference.

A: You should absolutely prepare a presentation! There isn't a voting process-- when the conference starts, anyone who wants to lead a session can do so simply by writing the title on a post-it note and placing it on the session board. We try to have enough slots that everyone who wants to lead a session can do so, so if you've got something in mind when the event starts, you'll definitely have plenty of time to find a slot.

Often, people create or adapt sessions based on what they've seen in the unconference thus far--but don't take that to mean that your preparation will be wasted. Preparation always helps; just make sure you continue listening throughout BarCamp.

There are projectors built into the classrooms, which you can use during sessions. Session slots are 30 minutes long, with a ten minute break in between sessions to give a little bit of overflow room.

Q: What are the hours of the event? Is there any further agenda break-down, e.g. some pre- or post-events, or is it all talks/free for all the whole day?

A: You can find the event schedule here: Schedule

Q: I thought I could propose a session after I registered. Now I am registered but can not find a way to propose a session.

A: If you head over to the 2011 sessions page, you'll find a list of all currently proposed sessions, and a template to add your own detailed session proposals. Note that session proposals are just a way to announce intent, possibly have it featured in BCB promotion, and get some initial feedback. Sessions will be scheduled at the event by their presenters on a first-come, first-serve basis.
